An Emergency Care Unit (ECU), also known as the Emergency Department (ED) or Accident & Emergency (A&E), provides immediate and essential medical treatment for patients with sudden illnesses, injuries, or life-threatening conditions. ECUs operate 24/7 and prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition through a process called triage.

This is the initial assessment process where a nurse evaluates the patient's condition to determine the urgency of care needed. Patients with life-threatening conditions (e.g., cardiac arrest, severe breathing difficulty) are given immediate priority.
